Our Story
Dan Hicks
Some of my early work in social care involved working with individuals who were in large residential homes with regimented timetables and, I felt, very little independence or choice. I felt that they would better thrive in a smaller, supportive but independent environment similar to house share situations enjoyed by students and young adults just starting out.
In 2007, I challenged myself by just registering the company name “Options for Living” and my goal was to have the company up and running, providing our idea of support within a year. And it was! We started small and then grew as we established ourselves. The aim was to create a holistic service that focused on developing life skills and independence whilst ensuring that dependency on support was not created. This took trust and a great deal of patience, as we navigated the journey into becoming a provider in the Bath & North East Somerset area.
Our focus has always been on creating a personalised service that aims to reduce support as people become more independent, and I feel the organisation’s ethos makes us unique, and sets us apart from other providers.
The thing I enjoy most, is that every day is different at Options for Living! I have always enjoyed enabling others to achieve their personal goals, and this includes being there for staff and the people we support. This involves being there for individuals at their time of need, as well as when things are going smoothly. Watching people graduate from our service and sometimes moving away from needing social care input, is also something that I truly relish and feel very proud of the staff team when we help someone achieve this goal.
